The Heraldry Society Christmas Lecture and Christmas Quiz

6:00 pm 18 December 2020 via Zoom

Get your Christmas celebrations off to a flying start with a fun-packed heraldic evening. Test your knowledge of heraldry against other enthusiasts. Learn secrets about heraldry from the past and present. Augmented by lots of beautiful heraldic images.

We are looking forward to a splendid evening of social merriment and conviviality, combined with a challenging but fun quiz. The questions will range from easy to the perplexing. There is no need to be a heraldic expert, enthusiasm, guesswork and brio may well see you win a prize. Historic fun for all the family.

We will start the evening with a short talk by Dr John Mueller about oddities and obscurities in German heraldry. This will be followed by the quiz. There will be questions on Christmas heraldry, The College of Arms, Corporate Heraldry, Canting, Supporters, Badges, Unusual Beasts, Royal Heraldry and much more.

Unlike our usual lectures, which will remain free to view, there will be a small charge for this event. All the money raised after costs will be donated to support the St John Ambulance Association. Over the past year, this vital organisation has been working extra hard to provide care for those in need. Many of their usual fundraising events have had to be cancelled so we all must do what we can to help.

You can either enter as an individual (£5.00) or as a team (£25). Teams can be any number of people between two and six people.

It will not be necessary for teams to be physically present in the same place. Further information on how the quiz will be conducted on-line will be communicated nearer the time.

There are some great prizes for winning individuals and teams:

1) A personal tour of the College of Arms for six people conducted by Peter O’Donoghue, York Herald of Arms in Ordinary.

2) A case of wine. Twelve bottles of top quality wine all with heraldic labels.

3) A voucher to the value of £150 to be spent on books in the society’s online bookshop.

4) A high quality, laser-cut, 500 piece wooden jigsaw featuring the arms of all the city’s livery companies.
