An introduction to heraldry in Macedonia.

Jovan Jonovski, PhD, AIH was born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1971 where he graduated Physics. He studied Theology in Budapest, London where begins his scientific heraldic journey, learning practical heraldry from Melvyn Jeremiah of the Heraldry Society. In Novi Sad, Serbia at the Protestant-Theological Faculty in 2008 became Master of Theology. In 2014, at the Institute of National History, he became Master in history, and in 2014 defended Doctoral thesis titled: “The Sun and the Lion as symbols in Heraldry and Vexillology of Macedonia”.

Jonovski is member of the International Academy of Heraldry, member of the International Commission for Knights, member of the Committee for decorations of the President of the Republic of Macedonia (2009-2019), President and Chief Herald of the Macedonian Heraldic Society and member of many national heraldic associations.

He is editor in chief of Macedonian Herald, journal of the Macedonian Heraldic Society. He has published over 50 scientific papers.

Jonovski is author of the permanent exhibition “Coat of arms of Macedonia” at the Museum of Macedonia (2009), author of the books “Symbols of Macedonia” (2015), “The Sun and the Lion as symbols in Heraldry and Vexillology of Macedonia” (2019), and “The Sun and the Lion as Symbols of the Republic of Macedonia: A Heraldic and Vexillological Analysis” 2020.
