Speaker Dr Adrian Ailes

This talk considers why the Founders’ Book of Tewkesbury Abbey, a late medieval chronicle decorated with over 120 coats of arms, should now be considered a medieval roll of arms. It also looks at the Book’s close relationship with two other contemporary manuscripts, a Genealogical Roll of Founders once kept at Tewkesbury and the famous Rous Roll celebrating the early earls of Warwick.

Adrian Ailes is an Honorary Research Associate attached to the Centre for Medieval Studies at Bristol University. He is a Fellow of The Heraldry Society and is currently finishing a two-volume edition of Elias Ashmole’s Church Notes of Berkshire taken on Ashmole’s visitation of the county in 1665-66.
