The John Brooke-Little Lecture: Heraldry – The Mirror of Fashion, the Measure of Taste

6:30 pm 16 October 2019 The Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0BE

Eleanor Cross, former Assistant Clerk, The Worshipful Company of Pewterers

The commissioning and use of heraldry has been consistent of hundreds of years and provides valuable information about their bearers status and name. However, they are also a window into the taste of the individual. This talk will look at how each stylistic period is absorbed into the heraldry of the time. From the coat of arms of King Edward the Confessor with its stark cross flory and martlets to the opulent restoration heraldry of Charles II complete with ermine lined acanthus mantling.

Fellowship decorations to be worn.
