In this talk, Dr Michael Carter, historian at English Heritage, discusses the life and career of Thomas Tonge (d. 1536), successively York Herald and Norroy and Clarenceux King of Arms. There will a focus on his visitation of the northern counties in 1530, an invaluable source for the history of the region, its families and religious houses on the eve of the Dissolution.
