Heraldry Society Essay Prize

The Heraldry Society is pleased to invite submissions to a new essay competition with a prize of £750 and publication in The Coat of Arms, for an outstanding essay on a subject relevant to the fields in which the Society is interested.

The competition is open to any graduate or post-graduate student at a higher education institution, or to any researcher who has not previously been published by The Coat of Arms or Heraldry Gazette. Applicants need not be members of The Heraldry Society.

This prize offers an excellent opportunity for researchers to achieve publication in the premiere English-language journal devoted to heraldic and related studies. Essays must be relevant to the subject matters covered by the Heraldry Society’s publications; they must be based upon research; and should look to engage with existing and recent scholarship while developing new and interesting arguments. They can be focused on any period or region, but should be written in English, save for necessary citations in footnotes. They must be no more than 8,000 words and be unpublished.

All entries will be examined by an anonymous peer review panel and considered for publication in The Coat of Arms. The award of £750 and publication in the journal will be made to the winner of the prize.
