Heraldic Offices, Registrars and Nobiliary associations
In some countries, official bodies regulate all heraldry, public and private. In others, only state and civic emblems are controlled, while personal heraldry is not. Where there is a noble class, an association may exist to serve and record its members. In the absence of official oversight, the use of private arms may be registered by voluntary bodies.
We have listed all such organisations known to us. Sometimes the distinctions are not clear, but we have attempted to label them according to their roles (see the key below the list).
Many of the registrars of arms are heraldry societies, and are listed instead in adjacent pages according to geography.
(R) Body which maintains a register of personal arms.
(S) State institution which regulates heraldry of government, armed forces and/or local government.
(N) Association for the recognition and recording of the Noble class and its heraldry.
Bodies which may regulate heraldry generally and perform all the above functions are unlabelled.
