Notes

The familiar arms of the University of Oxford, the book with seven clasps between three coronets, are in the niche above the chancellor's head. The canting arms of Oxford, the ox and ford, are placed below the chancellor's feet. The silver matrix of this seal is still used and is in the custody of the Senior Proctor. The matrix is the earliest dated example of the use of the three coronets by Oxford University. It was made for Dr Thomas Chase, chancellor 1426-31, and is dated on the dorse; inscription: SIGILLUM: OFFICII: CANCELLARIATUS:STUDII:UNIVERSITATIS:OXONIE
