After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, packs of playing cards combining instruction with amusement such as this heraldic set, became popular in Britain. The arrangement of this example shows a close relationship with Richard Blome's Essay to Heraldry (1684) and Art of heraldry (1685). Each suit is devoted to specific topics. Hearts are devoted to specimen achievements of contemporaries, arranged by ranks except for the ace and two, which are devted to 'miiitary things'.
